How to merge PDF files without losing page quality
Combine existing page objects while checking order, mixed sizes and document features.

Merge pages rather than screenshots
Rendering each page as an image and rebuilding a PDF can remove searchable text and reduce detail. HSQ’s merge service uses pikepdf to append existing page objects into a new document. It does not deliberately rasterize pages or run the image compressor during merging.
This describes the implementation, not a guarantee that every PDF feature survives. Bookmarks, document-level metadata, forms and signatures need separate inspection. Retain the originals, especially for signed or interactive documents.
Plan page order
Put source documents in the desired sequence and check the result’s first and last pages at each boundary. A title page can make an unexpected duplicate easy to miss. Page sizes are allowed to differ; merging does not automatically standardize portrait and landscape pages.
Example: joining a two-page cover note to a five-page report should produce seven pages, with the report beginning on page three. Verify that count in the PDF viewer rather than relying on the filenames.
Treat compression as another decision
A merged file can still be large because it contains all of the source pages. Compressing afterward is a separate operation that can rewrite images. Keep the uncompressed merge if small text, scans or print detail matter.
For the receiving system, test searching for a known sentence, opening links and printing a representative page. If a source is password-protected or damaged, resolve that issue before merging. Uploads are processed on the server, and clearing results requests deletion rather than guaranteeing immediate removal.
Verify the boundaries after merging
Name or arrange the sources in the intended sequence before merging. A two-page introduction plus a five-page report should produce seven pages; inspect pages two and three to catch a reversed source or missing boundary page.
If a merged file fails to open, test each input separately for a password or corruption. If bookmarks, forms or signatures are important, check them in the resulting document rather than using page count as the only acceptance criterion.
